Showcases at the Home Design Show include the popular “MADE,” featuring a selection of limited-edition and one-of-a-kind fine art objects, furniture, and lighting, all available for purchase during the event. Since launching in 2008, the section has quadrupled in size. The 2012 edition will feature 160 participants, including Fern, a Hudson Valley based furniture company crafting heirloom quality furniture from American hardwoods, reclaimed antique timbers and salvaged objects.

“Being a new, small company, we hope to reach a wider audience that appreciates handmade contemporary furniture,” Jason Roskey of Fern tells us via e-mail. Fern will be exhibiting their Orchard Low Table (featured above), a Beatrice Stool and a new set of chairs, among others. I love using my hands to work out our designs,” shares Roskey. “I’m really interested in designing and making wood furniture, based on the principles of longevity that was once associated with heirloom pieces.”

Having relocated from Brooklyn in October 2011 to Hudson Valley New York, which is about 2 hours away from New York City, Roskey relishes in the surprising appealing network of artists, woodworkers and crafts people who have made the same move Upstate. “It’s an easier place to make a creative life, and the Hudson Valley is a great place for Fern to be based because it provides us with much of the lumber we use in our work,” Roskey states.
